About Us
Catholic Earthcare Australia is a program of Caritas Australia that responds to the ‘cry of the earth’ and ‘the cry of the poor’ working to safeguard the integrity of creation and providing a voice for victims of environmental injustice.
Catholic Earthcare was established in 2002 by the Australian Catholic Bishops’ Conference and mandated, through the activities of education, research and advocacy to give leadership in responding to Pope John Paul ll’s call to “stimulate and sustain the ecological conversion”.
This has evolved into leading an Australian response to Laudato Si’, the environmental encyclical in which Pope Francis invited all around the world to reflect, pray and take action to protect our common home.
With the launch of the seven Laudato Si’ Goals, Catholic Earthcare has responded by developing programs for Schools, Parishes, Organisations and Families to undertake the journey towards becoming living Laudato Si’ communities by working towards the seven Laudato Si’ Goals and building the Laudato Si’ Action Platform.
Catholic Earthcare was incorporated into Caritas Australia in 2018 to create synergies between agencies that service the ‘cry of the poor’ and ‘the cry of the earth’.
In the beginning….
In 2002, elders Fr Denis Edwards, Trish Hindmarsh, Dr Veronical lawson, Fr Charles Rue, Br Frank Richardson and many others began Catholic Earthcare Australia after the Bishops’ social justice statement ‘A New Earth’, released that same year, called for its establishment.
In 2022 we celebrated Earthcare’s ongoing role in leading families, schools and parishes in spiritual transformation, ecological dialogue and action to care for our common home.
