In 2019 Saint Kieran’s Primary school began putting into place more sustainable practices. Over the past two years there have been a number of initiatives that are becoming part of our school culture. Each class composts their fruit break and lunch snacks daily as well as recycling juice boxes and milk bottles.
We have identified local birds and made posters that are displayed in the lunch area. Our children have become avid bird watchers and write their initials on the posters when they spot the bird so we can track the frequency of birds in our school grounds.
By far, our biggest project has been our kitchen garden where we grow all sorts of herbs and vegetables. This year we have expanded our garden to incorporate a sensory garden. We are also proud to say that our zucchini (affectionately known as Big Bessie) placed first in the local Mt Isa show last week.
