O praise and bless my Lord, thank him and serve him humbly but grandly...St Francis of Assisi
St Benedict of Norcia
A very early Mentor-model of care for the land is Benedict of Norcia, a 5th century man who gave to Christian Western Spirituality a model of Monastic life. This was a counter balance to the ravaged state of Europe. It was in melt down after the Fall of the Roman Empire. There was chaos with the break- down of Law, Infrastructures and Administration. The condition of much of the land was destroyed and many people lacked direction. Benedict's Rule presented a model of sustainability, stability, and of a systematic reclaiming of and respect for the land.
Whatever the quality of the land around them, the Monks were required to till it, enhance it, sow it, and harvest it. Their spirituality which accompanied their everyday life style was very balanced. They understood from his teaching (RULE) the principles of sustainability and the rhythm of the seasons...(no strawberries in Winter!). His actual Rule adapted the Monk's daily lifestyle according to the seasons of
Mother Earth and the twin virtues of earth balance and spirituality balance ordained the measured times of Prayer and Work , a much quoted dictum. Their attitude was not one of Domination but of Respect. One of Benedict's teachings of great significance to us, and a remarkable insight, is the spirituality of things. He urges the monks "to handle the goods of the Monastery as if they were the vessels of the altar." the humble hoe takes on the same dignity as a Chalice... all connected into a reverent vision of life.
In teaching the Gospel message and in the example of the early Church, Benedict wants all things to be held in common, with wise distribution of necessary goods to those who hold the various offices He always wants the poor to be looked after and indeed guests are to be received as Christ.
Benedict's teachings have so much to say to us in our materialistic throw-away culture and his teachings can call us to the principles stated above and to conversion. We are challenged to a moderate, accountable, reverent and balanced life-style. -
