Protection of the environment challenges the modern world to guarantee a harmonious form of development, respectful of the design of God the Creator
and therefore capable of safeguarding the planet - Pope Benedict XVI
Environmental Sustainability at St John of God Hospital Murdoch
Environmental stewardship is a key component of our hospital’s strategic and operational planning and environmental sustainability is part of our daily business operations. Through a range of activities we are limiting our impact on the environment.
Environmental Management Committee
Our Manager Environmental Sustainability chairs the Environmental Management Committee (EMC) that involves managers from key areas within the hospital. This committee meets monthly to discuss Key Performance Indicator data, implementation of the environmental action plan, and any other relevant issue.
Environmental Action Plan
Each year we develop an Environmental Action Plan that guides the implementation of activities to meet our sustainability objectives. The
plan covers a diverse range of goals, such as ensuring legislative compliance, sustainable facilities management, education, caregiver involvement, audit and review, and leadership commitment. We report our progress and achievements to the Environmental Management Committee and the Hospital Management Committee.
Key Performance Indicators
We collect energy, water and waste data which are reported quarterly as Key Performance Indicators (KPI). These KPIs are discussed
by the Hospital Management Committee, and posted on the environmental notice board located on the lower ground floor lift lobby area for all caregivers to view. This data is also submitted to St John of God Health Care for comparison with all divisions.

Ecological Conversion, Franciscan FriarsThe Franciscans are currently working with Catholic Earthcare in developing a formation programme for the Friars to deepen their understanding of environmental issues and to experience this ecological conversion. They are also working with CarbonSystems Australia to develop the tool for gathering information/data and in order to calculate the energy used by the Province and to evaluate our practices. A long and slow process of education but one that each member of the Province is committed too.
